Sainte-Marie-Majeure, commonly known as The Major, is one of the main visit of Marseilles as this cathedral is unique. First because it is the only cathedral built in France in the nineteenth century, with impressive dimensions capable of welcoming up to 3000 people. But above all, with its remarkable Byzantine style, it is like no other one and can even confuse the visitor accustomed to a more academic style. It is the symbol of Marseilles "Gateway to the East" at a time when, as first port of France, it was trading with the whole world, and particularly with its colonies.
